A blockage
Leaves, moss from the roof and silt build up until water cannot get past. Clearing the run and the downpipe usually solves it.
The wrong fall
A gutter should slope gently towards its outlet. If brackets have broken or the fascia has moved, water collects in the low point and spills.
Too few outlets
A long run with a single downpipe can be overwhelmed in heavy rain. Adding an outlet or a larger gutter fixes it.
Leaking joints
Drips at a union are a different problem: the rubber seal has hardened. The joint can be resealed or the fitting replaced.
What it damages
- Green staining and damp on the wall
- Rotten fascia and soffit boards
- Damp at the top of rooms inside
